Honey is a fragrant, sweet, sticky liquid made by the hard-working honeybees.

The clear honey found in the Lush products that are made in the UK, Germany and Japan comes from Casa Apis, a cooperative in Brazil made up of 28 communities. Bees’ welfare is at the heart of their practice and the cooperative sees beekeeping as a communion with nature, a way to have better lives while helping to increase the bee population and land’s regeneration.

Our Australian and New Zealand markets have their own suppliers. Beechworth Honey supplies Australia. Through their daily work, the creation of an arboretum, charitable donations, and many other projects, they aim to support biodiversity, protect threatened habitats, and advocate for sustainable beekeeping. Cammells Honey, meanwhile, supplies New Zealand. This family-owned business prides itself on selling premium, unadulterated honey collected by experienced beekeepers.

In Lush’s best-selling soap Honey I Washed The Kids, our UK manufacturing site uses two other sources. One honey is from a network of British beekeepers, where all beehives are located on permaculture or wild lands with diverse forage all year round. The other one is Ethiopian, from a supplier committed to protecting the remaining forests of the country.

At Lush, we agree that the modern honey industry treats bees like farmed animals. To ensure their welfare is respected in our supply chain, we work with beekeepers who understand the importance of managing hives with consideration and of working in a minimally invasive way. We do not allow the use of harmful practices such as queen wing clipping or artificial rearing.

Where possible, we aim to work directly with beekeepers, but in any case, we ask for full traceability and adherence to our high standards. We actively encourage and select those who go beyond organic beekeeping and implement regenerative practices that positively impact local wildlife and the hives’ environment.

Because of its remarkable antimicrobial and humectant properties, honey also contributes to the preservation of products’ formulae.

Bees collect nectar from flowers and carry it to their hives where the worker bees convert it into honey. Half a kilogram of honey contains the essence of about two million flowers and the colour, fragrance and properties of honey vary depending on the varieties foraged. Bees need to make thousands of round trips to collect nectar, and a single bee produces only about a teaspoon of honey during its lifetime.

Turmeric is native to South and Southeast Asia, where remedial use of the plant’s root was recorded in ayuredic literature as early as 4000 years ago. 

Fresh turmeric roots, or rhizomes if we’re getting technical, have a knobbly appearance similar to ginger. When cut into, these rhizomes reveal vibrant orange flesh. Curcumin, the compound responsible for this eye-catching colour, is a soothing ally to both skin and body, packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Turmeric rhizomes can be used fresh, soaked to create a nutrient-rich infusion, or dried and ground into a powder.

In herbology, fresh turmeric is favoured for its wide-ranging health benefits. Research into this mighty ingredient has shown that the botanical compound curcumin may well explain why, throughout history, records have included turmeric in traditional remedies to help ease sore, aching muscles and other complaints. Its protective and calming properties are thought to soothe physical discomfort when used in massage, making turmeric a great recharging addition to any post-workout routine. Curcumin also helps bring a natural radiance to dull skin, which is why turmeric is often used in skincare to achieve a subtle glow.

A cleansing and invigorating herb for happy skin and scalp.

Native to the Mediterranean, rosemary is an evergreen shrub that can grow to six feet tall. A relative of basil and oregano, it belongs to the Labiatae family and has been cultivated since ancient times for use in medicine.

Rosemary’s aroma complements perfumes well with a very herbaceous yet floral scent, reminiscent of lavender to some.

It is believed to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss when applied to the scalp. It also makes the hair shine!

The plant's antibacterial and antifungal properties combat dandruff, cleanse the skin and help create effective deodorants. 

The oil improves focus when inhaled, relaxes sore muscles in baths, and calms inflammation.

Juniper, with its lightly camphorous scent, adds a woody freshness to products.

Great for reviving worn-out bodies and tired spirits, juniper makes a balancing addition to warm baths and skincare alike. 

Juniper is a member of the cypress family Cupressaceae, a coniferous species of trees that are distributed right across the Northern Hemisphere. Some species are cultivated for their bark, which is distilled to produce smoky-scented cade oil. Others produce aromatic seed cones, whose fleshy scales fuse to resemble a berry. These blue-black ‘berries’ can be used as a spice or steam-distilled to make an essential oil rich in benefits.

Juniper is thought to have a balancing effect on sebum levels, helping to regulate oiliness, which can be useful for spot-prone skin and greasy scalps. It is also used in meditation to encourage mental clarity and promote a calm, grounded feeling. Juniperberry oil in particular contains various chemical constituents with potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, such as α-pinene and sabinene. 

Juniper has held folkloric significance for thousands of years. Across multiple cultures, its branches were burnt and oil used to ward off evil, and juniper oil has even been found in Ancient Egyptian embalming vessels. The herb is widely used for cleansing and protection, and its berries are thought to bring prosperity. Juniper even lent its name to the popular spirit, gin. Gin is an abbreviated form of the Dutch word jenever, meaning juniper, since juniper berries are used in the liquor's production to give it its distinct flavour.
