Made in England
What's in it for you?
- Why does it smell so good? Because because because because because! Because of the wonderful fragrance it has. A bright top of bergamot and grapefruit blends with balsamic olibanum resin and warm benzoin, bringing to mind a cup of Earl Grey tea.
- We're off to see the lathers, the wonderful lathers of soap. This bar is made the traditional way by saponification. We mix it by hand, adding in beautiful ingredients for their effects, pour it hot and let it cure before it takes pride of place by your sink. This in-house coconut soap base serves up a soap that can take heavy handling — it's firm, bubbly and perfect for soap squidgers.
Leaving the world Lusher than we found it
- Made with uplifting bergamot oil sourced from small-scale multi-generational (three) citrus farmers in Reggio Calabria, Southern Italy. We've partnered with the same family producer for two decades (since 2005).
- Benzoin is a pioneer species in the Laos Forest: it fosters ecosystem recovery, aids in soil rehabilitation and helps woodland to flourish.
- This product needs no packaging and no introduction. It will arrive naked and proud in your parcel because we want to strip back on unnecessary packaging.
- This self-preserving product is formulated to stay fresh and effective without added synthetic preservatives.
How to use: Lather, rinse and resume your adventure.
How to store: Store somewhere dry and draining in between uses, like one of our soap dishes!
Bergamot is a citrus fruit grown in Southern Italy and is known for perfuming Earl Grey tea. It yields a delightful essential oil that smells like ‘sunshine in a bottle’.
The bergamot tree doesn't like extremes. On the contrary, it enjoys a well-balanced environment and is consequently known as the most delicate citrus tree. The soil must be just right (not too dry, moist or chalky), and the weather must be temperate (not too hot, cold, or windy). If those conditions are met, the tree grows yellow-green fruits whose appearance and taste are a bit like an orange and a lime combined.
Bergamot oil soothes the skin and scalp and contributes to balance sebum production while keeping bacteria at bay.
It makes the hair shine!
Its unique scent profile makes it very versatile. It can complement and enhance sweet, floral, fruity, fresh, herbal, or warm perfume just as well.
When inhaled, its elevating fragrance clears the mind and encourages a sense of well-being.
Since 2005, Lush has sourced bergamot oil from a family business in Reggio Calabria, southern Italy. This dedicated page explains more about our supplier and the scent profile of bergamot oil.
Bergamot is featured in many Lush products with various scents! It would take too long to give you a complete list, but here is a selection of products if you are into citruses and a collection of scents that lift the mood (in our opinion)!
Sweet and zesty grapefruit takes you and your skin to paradise!
Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is a hybrid between an orange and a pomelo that is native to the Caribbean island of Barbados. There are many varieties with different skin and pulp colours, the best known to consumers being pink and red grapefruits as they have the sweetest taste.
At Lush, we use fresh pink and white grapefruit depending on our product inventors’ wishes but also availability on the food market. The essential oil is made from white grapefruit only; a variety with a yellow pulp that is a favourite in the juice and perfume industries.
They are bursting with salicylic acid, a natural fruit acid that exfoliates and clears the skin and scalp.
The sweet and zesty aroma of their fresh juice lifts the spirits! It is said to remind us of the sun’s energy and can help perk up a dull morning.
Their high vitamin C content helps to firm, smooth and brighten the skin.
The oil has a sparkly, joyful scent.
It gives shine to the hair.
It has antiseptic, astringent and mattifying properties on the skin and scalp.
Grapefruit’s sweet and citrusy aroma is about 90% limonene, an aromatic antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. This is why the oil is thought to have skin-firming properties. It really is a terrific fruit!
Finding a good, direct source for grapefruit oil has been a challenge over the years as the white grapefruit variety is often overshadowed by food industry trends, which can influence the quality and availability of the oil. Fortunately, after some research, Lush buyers found an essential oil processing company in the USA that can meet our production needs.
The fresh grapefruits are purchased from specialist distributors. Depending on the time of year, they source products from different countries to try and achieve availability all year round. They work hard to supply as much organic product as possible and provide the highest quality available the rest of the time.
We're more accustomed to seeing frankincense fill the air with wisps of fragrant, meditative smoke, but connoisseurs know it is also fantastic in cosmetics and perfumery.
First of all - frankincense can also be called olibanum, and this is something you can undoubtedly learn at Lush as we tend to use both! They’re equally beautiful and accurate names, and it’s been hard to make a choice.
Now, what is it exactly? Frankincense/olibanum is a tree resin harvested across Africa and the Middle East. Small notches are made on the trunk of Boswellia trees, causing a milky sap to flow. Cutting the same spot several times allows this sap to become more fragrant each time. Harvested once the resin has begun to harden, the finished product looks like small rocks. These chunks can be burned to diffuse a fragrant smoke but can also be distilled, diluted or crushed to obtain other consistencies.
Its complex and evocative scent makes a beautiful base note for perfumes. It is often described as earthy, piney and spicy with fresh citrus notes.
The scent of incense is said to anchor and calm the mind, help slow breathing, and improve overall well-being.
As a fixative, it carries and enhances other fragrancing ingredients and helps perfumes last longer.
Thanks to its antimicrobial qualities, it can serve as a natural preservative.
It is often found in skincare products for its astringent, antibacterial, soothing and smoothing effects.
Frankincense was already burned during religious ceremonies by ancient civilisations and was one of the first materials used as a perfume. In the age of the Pharaohs, its preservative properties led to its use in embalming and mummification. It was also widely popularised by the Bible, which mentions frankincense as one of the rare and expensive gifts given to baby Jesus by the three kings. Even today, it can still be found smoking on altars and is particularly appreciated to purify the air or encourage meditation.
Boswellia is a genus of trees with several species producing a fragrant resin. The oil and resinoid we purchase is made from the Boswellia sacra (syn. Boswellia carterii) tree. It's been considered a Near Threatened species since 1998 and that's why the Lush buying team strives to find the best possible suppliers who respect the trees, the land and the people. You’ll find the scent of frankincense enliven many of our products, especially our bath bombs and perfumes.
Benzoin has been used in incense and perfumes for centuries. Its sweet, spicy and slightly earthy aroma brings comfort and calm to the mind.
Benzoin is a natural resin that can be collected from two types of styrax trees: Styrax benzoin, native to Sumatra, and Styrax tonkinensis, which grows in Southeast Asia.
Resin is a natural bandage for trees. It drips from wounded trunks and hardens in the open air, protecting the wounds from possible disease, fungus, and insect attack. Resin is full of potent aromatic compounds, which probably inspired humans to try and make something out of it centuries ago. Some trees produce a lot of it, making it easy to harvest. Once hard, the resin can be burned pure, ground into powder, or refined with solvents to produce a fragrant extract called resinoid.
Its sweet, balsamic and powdery scent is a delightful sensory treat.
It soothes the skin and keeps it healthy and firm.
Its thick consistency creates a thin protective and conditioning film on the skin and hair, which helps prevent moisture loss and gives hair shine.
As a fixative, it helps other fragrance ingredients to blend well and last longer on the skin.
Lush purchases a tincture of benzoin from a UK-based company and a resinoid from a supplier in Laos. The latter works with 80 farmers who collect resin from Styrax tonkinensis trees, using traditional methods and focusing on quality. The trees are grown and harvested sustainably, and the forest is managed according to agroforestry principles. Farmers receive fair payments and labour security and safety.
