We’re so used to pepper that we tend to forget how precious, fragrant and versatile it is.

Piper nigrum, the black pepper plant, is a vine native to southern India that can grow up to 20 meters long (65 feet). Its very small, berry-like fruits grow in clusters and change in colour, taste, and scent as they ripen. Typically, black pepper is obtained from young green fruits which are picked and dried in the heat until they turn black and develop their pungent pepper smell. But you can also get white, green and red pepper from these fruits, each with a different intensity - so many flavourful choices with just one plant.

If this already amazes you, then rejoice, because there are so many plants in the world called pepper... enough to be overwhelmed! In Lush products alone, we use or have used pink pepper (Shinus molle), Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum Alatum), Sansho pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) and Jamaican pepper, also known as allspice.

Although each pepper has its own specificity, their main common trait (when it comes to cosmetics) is their scent. Not that they all smell the same! But their oil, powder or infusion release strong and complex fragrances that can perfume the skin and hair.

As for black pepper, which we love so much at Lush, it is said to help relieve tension and aches while stimulating blood circulation when applied to the skin and scalp.

Well, kind of! Black pepper is listed as one of the Fifty Plants that Changed the Course of History (Bill Laws, 2010). Indeed, it was one of the stars of the spice trade. This trade began near 1000 BCE, bringing fragrant plants from all over the world, by land and sea, to the most enthusiastic European noses and palates. Black pepper was so popular and profitable that it encouraged explorers like Christopher Columbus to find easier and faster routes to India (where pepper was produced). And we all know how that ended!

It’s good to be green. Limes have a sharp, zesty scent and bring the shine!

The key lime grows on the Citrus aurantifolia tree, mainly cultivated in Brazil and Mexico these days although it is native to Southeast Asia. Fruits are usually picked when green and unripe, making them richer in acid and sugar than lemons. 

Limes (and their oil) contain citric acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that provides gentle exfoliation and thus cleanses the skin of dead skin cells, leaving it radiant and smooth. 

Their acidity gives a lot of shine to the hair as it flattens their cuticles and so reflects light better.

It is a top note in perfume blends, meaning it’s the first one your nose will pick, but it’s also the first to evaporate on the skin.

Lush purchases lime oil from a producer in Mexico. The whole fruit, peel included, is pressed to obtain a juice-and-oil emulsion that is then steam distilled to recover the aromatic oil. We also use fresh and dried limes in our products, which can come from different places. With charcoal, we’re a bit like an early Beatles fan grumbling ‘I saw them at The Cavern before they got famous’. Because at Lush, we definitely sang the benefits of charcoal before it became a cosmetic superstar!

Charcoal results from the combustion of carbon-full materials, such as wood. Traditionally, it is made by stacking dried wood in kilns to burn until completely charred, which can last up to sixteen hours. Used as fuel for thousands of years, it is also a natural black pigment much appreciated by cavemen and modern artists alike. Charcoal has, in fact, countless game-changing applications, such as a water purifier, gunpowder, medicine or even… cosmetic ingredient!

What really sets charcoal apart is its porous nature. Charcoal particles are full of holes and crevices called micropores, which give the material adsorption powers. Adsorption means that the holes help external molecules and atoms adhere to the charcoal's surface and be transported with it. After these properties were documented in the 1700s, they were tested for medical applications in the 1800s and found success as an antidote to some ingested poison.

Activated charcoal or activated carbon, as you may sometimes see it labelled, is charcoal pushed to its limits. Simple charcoal goes through a complex chemical process that not only removes every possible impurity but also increases the porosity and, therefore, the adsorption capacity of charcoal. This highly improved material is included in the WHO list of essential medicines.

It gives a deep cleanse by attracting excess oils and impurities.

Depending on its particle size, it can gently exfoliate the skin from dead skin cells and polish the teeth.

In deodorants, it helps control sweat and limit the growth of body odour-producing bacteria.

In haircare, its cleansing properties can leave the hair feeling lighter, which results in extra volume and bounce.

Tea is good for the skin, mouth, and soul.

Camellia sinensis can be a tall shrub with fragrant white flowers, but it is often kept very small and leafy for cultivation purposes. With each new shoot, the fresh leaves are plucked and used to make the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water: tea!

There are many types of tea, the main ones being white, green, black, oolong and pu'er (or pu-erh) and within which you can find even more varieties. They are all obtained from the generous Camellia sinensis. Besides the location and conditions in which they grew, what differentiates each of these types is the time of harvest and the process they undergo afterwards.

Rolled, cut, pan-fried, roasted, steamed, fermented... almost everything has been tried on tea. These methods, which often go back several centuries, create a noticeable difference in the colour and taste of tea. The leaves can also be blended with other fragrant plants for an infinite variety of tastes. The most popular blend in Great Britain is the Earl Grey, made from black tea and citrus fruits.

At Lush, we don’t stick to just one type of tea. This is to have different scents and colours and also sometimes, let’s face it, to fit our inspiration. For example, it sounded just right to use gunpowder tea in a product called Boom! 

Interestingly, teas’ composition can differ depending on the way they are processed. So, each type will have slightly different benefits for the skin and hair. This is why we mainly use green-type teas, as they are usually richer in antioxidants and have more potent soothing and antibacterial properties.

It may be less known globally, but the tea plant also grows small flowers which, once fertilised, produce seeds. These seeds can be pressed to obtain oil. It is a precious cosmetic ingredient as it moisturises the skin, but is also soothing and rich in antioxidants thanks to its vitamins K, A and E content.
