Sandalwood is a distinctly reassuring and grounding scent; it creates the base of many marvellous perfumes.
Sandalwood is an umbrella name for many scented trees, all belonging to the Santalum genus. These evergreen trees can grow up to 50 feet tall and have to be at least 25 years old before the wood is ready for distillation.
The scent of sandalwood is warm, sweet and woody.
The oil is astringent, emollient and soothing to the skin.
It fixes other essential oils, naturally enhancing the longevity of a perfume.
There are about 10 different types of sandalwood acress various parts of the world. Its aroma can change slightly depending on the origin.
Because of its popular fragrance and importance in many rites and folk medicine around the globe, sandalwood has been overexploited and the harvesting badly managed for centuries, leaving some species endangered. Although regulations have been made by governments, the high value of the wood still leads to smuggling, counterfeits and corruption, making it very difficult to find sustainable sources and a good oil quality. After long investigations and adventures, Lush buyers have found a few reliable sources. Delicately floral and somewhat citrusy, the scent of neroli is distinctively cheering.
Neroli oil comes from the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium amara), which is an evergreen member of the Rutaceae plant family. Many parts of the tree are used for perfuming and culinary purposes. The fruits flavour food and drinks, and the flowers are distilled to produce neroli oil and orange flower absolute. Petitgrain oil is also obtained from the leaves and twigs of this same tree.
Neroli is naturally uplifting and widely used in aromatherapy for its stress-relieving effects. This oil is a true luxury, as the distillation process requires a lot of flowers to produce just a little.
Marie-Anne de La Trémoille (1642 - 1722) named the bitter orange flower oil ‘neroli’ after the city Nerola in Italy of which she was the princess. She loved to wear the oil as a perfume and created a trend in European royal courts - she would probably be called an influencer nowadays.
Lush sources a few different neroli oils from several different suppliers. To find out more, browse your Lush product’s list of ingredients and click on the ones you are interested in. This should take you to a page full of details!
Milky, soft, soothing… Even when they’re exfoliating the skin, oats are incredibly gentle.
Oats are among the many members of the grass family, which together provide a staple diet for most of the world’s population. Wild oat seeds dating back to 2000BC have been found in Egypt. The oat grain in its natural state takes a long time to cook, so they are usually rolled and flattened into flakes, as this makes them easier to prepare.
When soaked in warm water they become soft, and produce a rich, soothing milk.
They contain polysaccharides which become gelatinous when mixed with water, and leave a protective film on the skin.
They contain avenanthramides, a type of antibiotic which acts as an antioxidant and may contribute to the soothing effect of the grain.
Whole or finely ground, they also make a very gentle exfoliant when applied to the skin.
A moisturising and replenishing oil can be extracted from oat kernels. It contains ceramide, a lipid that can be naturally found in the epidermis, creating a barrier on the skin alongside sebum to protect it and maintain moisture. Applying an oil with ceramide, like oat oil, helps restore and strengthen the skin's natural defence.
At Lush we purchase different types of oat and oat-derived products depending on the effects we want to obtain. To find out more about each of them and their suppliers, browse your Lush product’s list of ingredients and click on the ones you are interested in. This should take you to a page full of details!
An ancient remedy for dry skin and hair, olives contain a rich, moisturising oil bursting with antioxidants.
The European olive tree (Olea europaea) has thrived for millennia under the hot sun of the Mediterranean basin. It grows the famous small, green fruit known as olive, prized for its taste and richness in oil. Olive trees are slow-growing and can have a very long lifespan. Indeed, the oldest known in the world are in Lebanon and are believed to be 6,000 years old. SIX. THOUSAND. (gobsmacked emoji)
Readily absorbed, it offers lightweight moisture.
It protects and conditions the skin and hair, improving their strength.
It gives the skin a healthy glow.
It makes the hair shine.
The oil’s lightweight feel is due to its squalene content, a compound that can also be found in human sebum. ‘Accepted’ well by the skin, it allows the oil to help restore a healthy level of moisture.
Olive oil contains some of the most potent antioxidants in the world, namely vitamin E, hydroxytyrosol (a plant polyphenol) and oleic acid. These compounds are thought to help the skin cells fight against the oxidising action of free radicals. This means that they could help the skin stay firm and healthy for longer. Besides, olives, olive leaves, and olive oil have shown very promising anti-tumour action and protection against cancer when used at a certain level and in specific conditions.

At Lush, we use a lot of moisturising olive oil, but we also purchase the lesser-known olive leaf absolute to complement some of our perfumes. Extracted by solvent from the green-grey leaves of the tree, it has a refreshing herbal scent with a hint of fruity aroma and bitterness.
Lush purchases olive leaf absolute from Egypt, where the leaves are trimmed off the trees after the fruit’s harvest. All the other olive-derived ingredients that you can find in our products have different stories and origins.
