Slip on some fresh banana for ap-peel-ingly shiny hair and hydrated skin. Bananas are rich in vitamins and minerals and have a high potassium content. They are moisturising for the skin and help to condition the hair effectively.

The banana plant, Musa paradisiaca, is a large, perennial herb. Its trunk consists of tightly wrapped leaf sheaths, with a stem that pushes up from the centre and grows flower spikes. Blossoms grow into upturned ‘fingers’, with each bunch containing as many as twenty fingers or bananas. Some plants have been producing fresh fruit for over a hundred years.

Bananas are made up of 12% starch and lots of fibre, giving them their unique texture that we know and love. It makes them perfect for creating a sumptuous, thick consistency in certain products, such as hair treatments and body lotions.

Bananas are good for you when applied topically, not just as a healthy snack. They are rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, which are essential for maintaining supple skin and strong hair. Banana skin is thought to possess antifungal properties, and both peel and pulp contain natural oils to boost shiny hair and give the skin a nourished, healthy glow.

Every week, perfectly ripe bananas arrive fresh from local suppliers and go straight into our handmade products. That means you get the freshest fruit possible - no peeling back on quality here!

Nearly all of our fresh fruit and vegetables are purchased from the same specialist distributor, with whom Lush UK* has been working since 2005. Depending on the time of year, they source products from different countries to ensure availability all year round. They work hard to supply as many organic products as possible and provide the highest quality available the rest of the time.

*With several manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.

Under the sea, forests of slimy algae grow, and they’re full of benefits for the skin and hair.

Texturising

On this last point, it should be noted that certain seaweeds have gelling properties, especially agar-agar and Irish moss (from which a powder called carrageenan is extracted). When combined with the right ingredients, they can help create a wide range of textures and shapes for our products such as our shower jellies.

Lush was founded in Poole, a coastal town in southern England where it is still strongly rooted in today. Outside the headquarters, massive seagulls soar and cry, and salty waves crash onto the quay. No wonder the seaside has been such an inspiration for our products! It's also why we're not afraid to use strong-scented seaweed absolute in some of our fragrances.

Saying that we source them from the sea would probably sound a bit vague! At Lush, we purchase a lot of different algae from around the world - fresh, dried, powdered, and even distilled. To learn more about each of these, you can go through your product’s ingredient list and click on the one you’re interested in. A juicy lemon will always brighten your day - and your skin!

Oh, we all know what lemon is, surely!? Okay, for those of you who don’t, it’s a fruit that grows on a small, slightly thorny, evergreen tree that belongs to the Rutaceae family. The lemon tree typically grows in Italy, Asia and East India, and produces highly fragrant blossoms and shiny leaves as well as this bright yellow, oval-shaped citrus treat.

Lemon oil and juice are known for their deeply cleansing and brightening effects on the skin.

A lemon’s natural fruit acids encourage the cuticle of the hair to lie flat, reflecting more light and in turn enhancing shine in the hair.

Lemon oil is often used as a top note in perfumery, adding a refreshing quality to fragrances to directly delight your synapses.

The juice is full of vitamin C which makes your skin glow and helps the complexion.

Since 2005, Lush has sourced bergamot, lemon and mandarin essential oils directly from a family business that have been producing citrus oils for three generations. While the lemons and mandarins thrive under the sun of Sicily, the bergamot fruits are grown in Reggio Calabria, Southern Italy. Grown without pesticides, the lemons are collected by hand and pressed entirely with their peel. The resulting liquid then goes through a centrifugal process that separates the oil from the juice.

Spicy, sweet-scented cloves add warmth to perfumes and stimulate the blood flow.

Cloves are the dried aromatic flower buds of a tropical evergreen tree of the Myrtle family. When drying, the buds change colour from rose to brown. They can then be sold raw or put through a process of steam distillation to obtain an essential oil with a warm, rich and spicy aroma.

Cloves are known to have antiseptic properties that are beneficial for soothing skin irritations.

They offer a helping hand with boosting circulation and blood flow.

Their unique spicy yet sweet fragrance also has an uplifting and stimulating effect on the mind.

Cloves are used in herbal medicine. They were first mentioned in Chinese medicine in about AD600. Particularly known for their soothing effect on toothaches, it is said that the ancient Chinese also used to hold a clove in the mouth to perfume their breath when speaking to the emperor.

At Lush, we buy an oil distilled from clove buds and one obtained from the plant's leaves. Depending on the part used, the scent will be subtly different. We also use a lot of dried cloves, especially for our exclusive winter festive products. Each of these materials will be purchased from another source. To find out more about them, browse your Lush product’s list of ingredients and click on the ones you are interested in. This should take you to a page full of details!
