A juicy lemon will always brighten your day - and your skin!
Oh, we all know what lemon is, surely!? Okay, for those of you who don’t, it’s a fruit that grows on a small, slightly thorny, evergreen tree that belongs to the Rutaceae family. The lemon tree typically grows in Italy, Asia and East India, and produces highly fragrant blossoms and shiny leaves as well as this bright yellow, oval-shaped citrus treat.
Lemon oil and juice are known for their deeply cleansing and brightening effects on the skin.
A lemon’s natural fruit acids encourage the cuticle of the hair to lie flat, reflecting more light and in turn enhancing shine in the hair.
Lemon oil is often used as a top note in perfumery, adding a refreshing quality to fragrances to directly delight your synapses.
The juice is full of vitamin C which makes your skin glow and helps the complexion.
Since 2005, Lush has sourced bergamot, lemon and mandarin essential oils directly from a family business that have been producing citrus oils for three generations. While the lemons and mandarins thrive under the sun of Sicily, the bergamot fruits are grown in Reggio Calabria, Southern Italy. Grown without pesticides, the lemons are collected by hand and pressed entirely with their peel. The resulting liquid then goes through a centrifugal process that separates the oil from the juice.

Full of sugar and sunshine, the mandarin fruit may look small but it has big qualities.
Mandarins look a bit like small oranges, but their taste is usually slightly stronger and more acidic. The evergreen mandarin tree can grow up to six metres tall and belongs to the Rutaceae plant family.
With an uplifting citrusy and sweet fragrance, mandarin oil clears the mind and gives a sense of wellbeing.
Mandarin’s juice and oils brighten the skin and add shine to the hair by encouraging the cuticle to lie flat and reflect more light.
Depending on the ripeness of the fruit when it’s harvested, the oil will taste and smell different. When the peel is still green, the fruit is low in sugar, and therefore the oil has a rather green and citrusy scent. When the peel turns yellow, the oil gets much sweeter, and, finally, when it's orange-red, it even takes on a floral note close to neroli.

We also sometimes purchase fresh fruits that can come from various locations. To find out more about them and their supplier, browse your Lush product’s list of ingredients and click on the ones you are interested in. This should take you to a page full of details!
A cleansing and invigorating herb for happy skin and scalp.
Native to the Mediterranean, rosemary is an evergreen shrub that can grow to six feet tall. A relative of basil and oregano, it belongs to the Labiatae family and has been cultivated since ancient times for use in medicine.
Rosemary’s aroma complements perfumes well with a very herbaceous yet floral scent, reminiscent of lavender to some.
It is believed to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss when applied to the scalp. It also makes the hair shine!
The plant's antibacterial and antifungal properties combat dandruff, cleanse the skin and help create effective deodorants.
The oil improves focus when inhaled, relaxes sore muscles in baths, and calms inflammation.
Fresh, dried, powdered, distilled, extracted… we use a lot of different versions of rosemary at Lush, and for each of them we’ll have a different source supplying us. Let yourself be bewitched by this potent herb…
Sage is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). It grows oval, downy leaves with different colours depending on the variety. The common sage is green and covered with white fuzz. Its flowers blossom in white or pink spikes and attract a variety of pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
It delights the synapses with its pungent, grassy aroma!
It is a gentle herb, filled with skin-soothing and protective flavonoids.
It can be used in cosmetics for its antimicrobial properties.
In deodorants, sage powder helps to limit the growth of body odour-producing bacteria.
For centuries, sage has been used in pagan and Wiccan rituals. It is thought to purify and cleanse a place, warding off evil spirits. It has also been used as wound dressing. In Roman times, it was known as a ‘salvation plant’ - its name literally meant ‘cure’ or ‘save' from the Latin ‘salvare.’ Before the Romans, both the Egyptians and the Greeks used sage for its healing and antibacterial properties.
Although native to southern Europe, sage grows worldwide, especially in warmer temperate regions, favouring dry, sunny hillsides and open ground. Depending on the type of sage used in our product (oil, fresh or dried leaves) the supplier will vary.
