Clays leave the skin cleansed, soft and mattified like no other.
Clay minerals are tiny soil particles. No other mineral has been used as much in human history as clay. From growing plants to making ceramics, from engineering applications to cosmetics, clays seem to have limitless potential.
Absorbs excess oil (sebum) and water (sweat) into itself.
Makes a gently buffing paste when mixed with water.
Gives a pleasant, smooth texture to body and face masks.
There are many types of clay. Some are completely natural, like kaolin or rhassoul mud; some are mixed with colouring pigments, like rose clay. Some are made from a combination of several sedimentary clays, like fuller’s earth. Although they have common properties, each has its own specificities in terms of absorption power, mineral content, or granularity. Depending on these little differences, Lush inventors will choose one or the other to perfect their products’ formulae.

Your vegan pals may have told you this goes great in porridge - but did you know agave syrup can also serve your skin?
Agave is a succulent plant native to the Americas and Mexico. It’s characterised by rosettes of pale green fleshy leaves ranging from a few centimetres (inches) up to 2m50 (8 feet) high. The agave's core is called the piña and can be processed into a syrup, also called nectar.
If you create a succulent garden and mix aloe and agave species, your visitors may not be able to distinguish one from the other. Although they appeared and evolved on two different continents and are not even close relatives, the two plants share many similarities.
Agave syrup is often used as a honey substitute, not just in vegan cuisine but in Lush products too. Similarly to honey this ingredient:
Soothes the skin.
Conditions the hair.
Helps retain moisture in the hair and skin.
Has antimicrobial properties.
Sacred to the Aztecs, their mythology states that agave first grew on the tomb of the goddess Mayahuel. Mayahuel was fertile and generous, feeding her four hundred children with her four hundred breasts (beat that, Total Recall!) This metaphorically portrays agave really well, as the plant gives a lot. It is entirely edible – flowers, leaves, stems and sap – but only if cooked or processed in one way or another. Its juice can be fermented and distilled to produce tequila (in the case of the blue agave) and pulque. You can also get syrup from the sap and make rope from the fibres.

Aloe is thought to be one of the oldest folk remedies, well known for its healing qualities.
Aloe is the genus of several succulent plant species that grow well in dry soils and tropical climates. At Lush, we use three different types: Aloe vera (which means ‘true aloe’, syn. Aloe barbadensis), Aloe secundiflora and Aloe ferox. All of them have similar properties and are cultivated for medicinal and ornamental purposes. Clear gel and latex can be extracted from them.

And if those brilliant things weren’t enough, the cooling sensation you get when applied to the skin is excellent for reducing swelling and calming burns.
Depending on the species and if it’s fresh or dried, the aloe in Lush products can come from many different places in the world - mainly in Africa and North America. The jasmine flower is a delight for the senses! Its scent is powerful, sensual and enticing.
Jasmine belongs to the large olive family (Oleaceae). It is native to tropical regions of Eurasia, and Oceania. The jasmine flower is white or pale yellow, star-shaped and extremely fragrant. They open at night to release their sensual scent. Thousands of jasmine flowers are processed through solvent extraction to produce just one kilogram of jasmine absolute, which is a thick, dark orange liquid with a rich, floral aroma.
Jasmine absolute has an earthy floral aroma which provides a rich, deep note to products and perfumes.
The overall scent of a jasmine flower is seductive and heady; it entices and delights the senses.
The flowers can be used to soothe the scalp. They can also be used to rejuvenate and brighten the skin.
Jasmine was brought to Europe in the 16th century and became a staple ingredient in the perfume industry. Every August, a jasmine festival is held in Grasse, France, during which revellers scatter jasmine water and flowers over celebrating crowds and the town comes alive with music, events and visitors from all over the world.
Lush gets jasmine from many different places around the world such as India and Egypt. The flowers are ideally picked at sunrise when they are the most fragrant.
