The romantic scent of the rose is said to help restore inner balance and is considered by some to be an aphrodisiac.
Rose petals are the source of rose oil, which some say was the first floral essential oil to be distilled. Rose oil has been an important part of fragrances and flavours for thousands of years. It is perhaps the most beloved floral scent in the world. The many versions of rose materials that we include as key ingredients in our products have an array of different qualities that will serve your senses, your skin and your mind!
Depending on the concentration, roses products may:
Soothe
Balance
Subtly tighten the pores
Restore radiance
Improve elasticity
Reduce the appearance of broken capillaries
Rose flowers are used in our products in several forms (essential oils, infusion, petals, dried buds…) and each of them can be purchased in different places around the world. Not just for brunching! Oil-rich, creamy avocados bring a whole heap of nutrients to the party. They moisturise the skin and hair magnificently.
The avocado (Persea gratissima, syn. Persea americana) is the fruit of a subtropical tree native to Mexico and South America. The tree is a member of the laurel family (Lauraceae) and there are approximately 500 varieties, which produce fruits ranging from small and egg-like to heavy, pear-shaped fruits.
They’re full of soothing and antioxidant vitamins.
They're packed with oils that give moisturise, condition and lustre.
They contain proteins that help strengthen the hair.
They also contain lecithin, a substance that acts as an emollient.
Much like sesame oil, avocado oil is said to protect the skin from UV rays. It isn’t strong enough to be used as a sunscreen, but it’s recommended to help protect the skin from the signs of premature ageing that can be caused by exposure to sunlight. It is also thought to reduce age spots and the appearance of scars, thanks to a substance called sterolin.
At Lush, we use fresh avocados in some of our products, but also oil and butter made from the fruit. To find out more about each of them and their supplier, browse your Lush product’s list of ingredients and click on the ones you are interested in. This should take you to a page full of details!
Delicately floral and somewhat citrusy, the scent of neroli is distinctively cheering.
Neroli oil comes from the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium amara), which is an evergreen member of the Rutaceae plant family. Many parts of the tree are used for perfuming and culinary purposes. The fruits flavour food and drinks, and the flowers are distilled to produce neroli oil and orange flower absolute. Petitgrain oil is also obtained from the leaves and twigs of this same tree.
Neroli is naturally uplifting and widely used in aromatherapy for its stress-relieving effects. This oil is a true luxury, as the distillation process requires a lot of flowers to produce just a little.
Marie-Anne de La Trémoille (1642 - 1722) named the bitter orange flower oil ‘neroli’ after the city Nerola in Italy of which she was the princess. She loved to wear the oil as a perfume and created a trend in European royal courts - she would probably be called an influencer nowadays.
Lush sources a few different neroli oils from several different suppliers. To find out more, browse your Lush product’s list of ingredients and click on the ones you are interested in. This should take you to a page full of details!
Aloe is thought to be one of the oldest folk remedies, well known for its healing qualities.
Aloe is the genus of several succulent plant species that grow well in dry soils and tropical climates. At Lush, we use three different types: Aloe vera (which means ‘true aloe’, syn. Aloe barbadensis), Aloe secundiflora and Aloe ferox. All of them have similar properties and are cultivated for medicinal and ornamental purposes. Clear gel and latex can be extracted from them.
Soothing
Hydrating
Antibacterial
Softening
And if those brilliant things weren’t enough, the cooling sensation you get when applied to the skin is excellent for reducing swelling and calming burns.
Depending on the species and if it’s fresh or dried, the aloe in Lush products can come from many different places in the world - mainly in Africa and North America.
